Mesa Verde NP, Colorado

Situated at the head of this canyon in Mesa Verde National Park the Cliff Palace stands as the largest known dwelling of its kind in the four corners region. Rediscovered in modern times by the cattle rancher turned archeologist Richard Wetherill, this ruin was excavated and restored in the creation of Mesa Verde as a National Park. It is believed over 200 people once inhabited the structures which were built over dozens of years but ultimately and mysteriously abandoned around 1300. In the depths of winter, this site takes advantage of the low angle of sun to bring natural warmth to the dwelling while in summer the overhanging alcove provided deep shade and shelter from the intense sunlight.
