An error in judgement led the crew of this DC plane of the US Navy to crash land in the volcanic plains of southern Iceland in 1973. All crew members survived the incident and the plane was abandoned where it landed to endure the harsh weather for decades to come. A fairly disorienting hike leads through the barren volcanic landscape to this site which has become a bit of a tourist attraction since the country’s natural beauty placed it in the spotlight for adventure travelers. The scene is surreal and stands as a time capsule.
