The afternoon before this image was captured, we had spent hours preparing to head into the backcountry with our two young children (ages 5 and 8 at the time). By the time we were ready to hit the trail, nature had other plans and doused the area in drenching rain. Undeterred, we pivoted to enjoying some warm cocoa in the comfort of the Jackson Lake lodge while watching the evolving weather. With our backpacks still loaded, we camped at the foot of the mountains that night and awoke before dawn under a thick grey blanket of clouds. Knowing the area well, I had a hunch that the clouds were a layer of inversion and a short drive would deliver clear views of the mountains broken by dramatic clouds. Not everyone was thrilled with the spontaneous change of plans, but the resulting image made the sacrifice worth it! My daughter assisted while Dawn and our son snoozed in our Subaru. Shortly after, we were back at the trailhead and ready for our postponed adventure!
