A Love Letter to Venice, Italy: Fine Art Photography of Venice

Venice. Just the name conjures images of shimmering canals, gondolas gliding beneath ancient bridges, and the echoing footsteps on cobblestone streets. It’s a city that seems to float between reality and a dream, a place where time slows down, and every corner holds a story.

Our journey to Venice was nothing short of magical. Forget the crowds for a moment, the bustling markets, and the tourist traps. Instead, let's talk about the soul of Venice, the quiet moments that make this city so utterly captivating.

A City Built on Water

There’s something inherently romantic about a city built on water. The absence of cars creates a unique tranquility, replaced by the gentle lapping of waves against the fondamenta (canal-side walkways) and the rhythmic splash of oars. Exploring Venice by gondola is a must, of course. But don't just stick to the Grand Canal. Wander through the labyrinth of narrow canals, where colorful houses lean towards each other, creating a tapestry of vibrant hues reflected in the water.

Beyond the Tourist Trail

While St. Mark’s Square and the Rialto Bridge are iconic landmarks, the true charm of Venice lies in its hidden corners. Get lost in the sestieri (districts), discovering quaint bacari (traditional Venetian bars) serving cicchetti (small snacks) and local wine. Cross the less-traveled bridges, stumble upon hidden courtyards, and listen to the whispers of Venetian life.

Where to Stay

While some major hotel brands do offer properties in the area, many are located far from the central quarters of Venice which makes for a sheltered and somewhat non authentic experience of Venetian culture. In order to stay in the heart of the action where the pulse of the city is felt in a visceral way, we preferred a boutique hotel experience without sacrificing excellent service and amenities. We stayed at the quaint and beautiful Rosa Salva Hotel, the location is close to St. Mark’s Square affording John the privilege to get out and shoot before the area was packed with tourists. The Art of Venice was captured just after dawn under the archways of the magnificent architecture of the Doge Palace. There was one lone elderly man feeding the pigeons, spending the quiet hours perhaps as he had for many years before. As a photographer, I wanted to record the scene without disturbing the natural dance and rhythms of local life. To achieve my goals I opted to shoot only one frame of this scene, quietly composing my image as if I were a ghost just floating through the storied halls and passages of this iconic city.

Once the crowds began to arrive, it was time for exploration away from the central tourist areas of St. Marks square and the Rialto Bridge. We loved the fresh markets and off the square restaurants. One of our favorite culinary experiences was at La Zucca. Focusing on fresh local ingredients, the menu is constantly changing and creative. The tavern is small, with 35 seats inside and 12 outside. It is located a few steps from Campo San Giacomo Dall'Orio, at the foot of a picturesque bridge.

A City of Contrasts

Venice is a city of contrasts. It’s a place where ancient history meets modern life, where bustling tourist areas coexist with quiet, residential neighborhoods. It’s a city that’s both fragile and enduring, a place that’s constantly changing yet forever timeless.

Tips for Your Venetian Adventure

• Get lost: Embrace the labyrinthine streets and allow yourself to wander.

• Travel off-season: Avoid the crowds by visiting during the shoulder seasons (spring or autumn).

• Try the local cuisine: Venture beyond pizza and pasta to experience authentic Venetian dishes.

• Take your time: Venice is a city to be savored, not rushed.

Venice is a city that stays with you long after you’ve left. It’s a place that ignites the imagination and stirs the soul. It’s a city that reminds us of the beauty and fragility of our world. And it’s a place that I can’t wait to return to, to get lost in its labyrinth once again.
